Cape Coast, Ghana – The Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, has expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson as a leading contender for the papacy, citing his age, wisdom, and extensive experience as unparalleled qualifications.
In an interview with Accra-based TV3, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle highlighted Cardinal Turkson’s global influence, profound theological insight, and unwavering dedication to social justice and environmental advocacy. His endorsement has sparked renewed optimism among African Catholics, particularly in Ghana, that the Church could see its first Black Pope in modern history.
Currently serving as Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and formerly head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Cardinal Turkson has long been regarded as papabile—a term denoting a cardinal with strong papal potential.
“Our Cardinal is undoubtedly among the most worthy candidates,” Archbishop Palmer-Buckle affirmed. “He is of the right age, immensely experienced, and if his fellow Cardinals discern him to be the right choice, they will support him. We will pray for him, and it would be a tremendous honor for Ghana.”
However, he emphasized that the final decision rests with divine will and the collective discernment of the Church’s leadership. “We must trust in the Holy Spirit,” he said. “When Pope Benedict passed away, over 1.3 billion Catholics turned to prayer. Similarly, when the time comes, we will seek divine guidance to reveal the next Pope.”
The discussion follows the passing of **Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The late Pontiff, born Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected in March 2013 after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, in announcing the Pope’s death, praised his legacy: “Holy Father Francis devoted his life to serving the Lord and the Church. He exemplified Gospel values—courage, fidelity, and boundless love, especially for the poor and marginalized. With profound gratitude, we entrust his soul to God’s infinite mercy.”
As the Catholic world mourns, attention now turns to the upcoming conclave, where Cardinal Turkson may emerge as a historic choice to lead the Church into a new era.
