She’s Killing Our Relationship With Crazy Superstition

Mr Deg

She has been going to this prayer camp for the last two years. It was her mother who introduced her to this prayer camp. According to her, she fell seriously sick and was on the verge of dying until her mother took her to this prayer camp to receive healing. After she got healed, she was instructed not to have sex on her soul day. That’s the day she was born. She was born on Friday.

This happened before I met her and she told me right from the start that she doesn’t have shuperu on Fridays because it’s her soul day. I wasn’t bothered. After all, there are seven days in the week, so if one is taken out, there are six more days, right?

A year into the relationship, someone in their family died. People die and we move on but they wanted to know what killed the person so they went to this same prayer camp to find out why. After going through the rituals and everything, it was established by the camp leader that the death wasn’t natural and as such, there was more death on the way coming.

One of the things they had to do to avert more death in the family was to avoid sex on Saturdays—Saturdays because that is her mother’s soul day. Her mom, her dad and all three siblings were barred from having sex on Saturdays.

The company I’m working for had transferred me to another town to work. Where I’m working now is not too far from home so I come home every weekend to see my girlfriend. I come home on Friday night and leave on Sunday afternoon. What it means is that I’m not able to do shuperu until the Sunday that I would be leaving town. No problem.

Days ago she called to tell me that Sunday had also been exempted from shuperu by their camp leader. I asked, “Why? What happened again that she’s taking Sunday away?” She answered, “I can’t tell you everything going on in my family. The most important thing is, you know Sunday is a no shuperu day.”

I feel I’m being short-changed. And this is not something that changes along the line. Once the camp leader gives the order, it continues until maybe they decide to leave the church. When we marry, these days are still going to be off the table for us.

I see her on only weekends. There’s no way I can touch her on weekends when I see her. Is this a relationship? How can a camp leader determine when to enjoy my girlfriend? I’m leaving the relationship. She should go and marry the camp leader. Or I’m being petty?
